Discovering Hidden Gems: The Mankeshwar Shiva Temple
and My Penchant for Offbeat Temples and Forts
Growing up in bustling Mumbai, the allure of hidden gems and offbeat destinations always had a magnetic pull on me. There’s something profoundly captivating about veering off the beaten path and discovering places that aren’t on everyone’s radar. This spirit of adventure recently led me to the Mankeshwar Shiva Temple in Mankeshwar village, a destination neglected by most yet rich in history and artistry.
“It all happened during our road trip through Maharashtra and Karnataka. On our way back from Akalkot, we decided to take an overnight break in Barshi.” This temple is just a 40 mins drive from Barshi. Maharashtra ( I have given the photo of the map at the end of this blog)
The Mankeshwar Shiva Temple: A Forgotten Marvel
Located in the remote reaches of Mankeshwar village, the Mankeshwar Shiva Temple is a relic of ancient architecture and divine significance. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. Built centuries ago, this temple stands as a testament to the intricate artistry and incredible craftsmanship of the era.
Intricate Carvings and Architecture :
As you step into the temple premises, the first thing that catches your eye is the mesmerizing, intricate carvings on the walls and pillars. Each carving narrates a story from mythology, capturing scenes of divine entities, mythical creatures, and celestial dancers frozen in time. The sheer detail in the craftsmanship is awe-inspiring—every inch of stone meticulously chiseled to depict moments of spiritual significance. (I have attached the link of the photos of the carvings at the end of the blog)
One of the standout features of the temple is the beautifully carved Nandi (the bull, Lord Shiva’s vehicle) stationed at the entrance. The deity’s form is sculpted with precision, capturing Nandi’s powerful yet serene countenance. Inside, the sanctum sanctorum houses a Shivlinga, adorned with flowers and offerings by the few devotees who make their way to this secluded shrine.
A Journey Through Time and History
The Mankeshwar Shiva Temple isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the era of its creation. There are several legends surrounding the origins of this temple. Some locals believe it was built by a devout ruler who dedicated his life to Lord Shiva, while others say it emerged as a result of divine intervention. Whatever the origin, the temple’s historic and spiritual significance cannot be understated. ( I tried my best to find more information on this temple ,but nothing much was available on internet, Locals were too not pretty sure )
Why I Cherish Offbeat Temples and Forts :
My love for exploring offbeat temples and forts stems from a desire to connect with history and spirituality on a deeper level. Places like the Mankeshwar Shiva Temple offer a respite from the modern world’s incessant pace, providing a space for quiet reflection and a profound sense of connection to the past.
Visiting such neglected places also supports the preservation of cultural heritage. By bringing attention to these hidden marvels, we can help ensure they receive the recognition and care they deserve, safeguarding them for future generations to appreciate.
